With the purpose of getting healthy and shiny hair, it is common that we ladies apply to our hair all kinds of hair products, like gels, lotions and pomades. As time goes by, those products may produce build up more or less, leaving your hair look nothing but limp and lifeless. If this is the case, here comes the show time of a clarifying treatment. A clarifying treatment is used to remove impurities off your hair, which generally comes with two major methods — baking soda rinse and clarifying shampoo.
Baking soda rinse
Speaking of baking soda treatment, its well clarifying effect will come to many people’s mind. When shampooing your hair, add a tablespoon of baking soda to your shampoo and massage your hair and scalp gently. After that, do a basic conditioning treatment as usual. It is advised that you use lukewarm water for your first rinse and cold water for last rinse. Just like we use warm water to open the pores of our face and cold to close them, the same concept applies to our hair as well. Another benefit of baking soda treatment is that it is very affordable and readily available.
However, because baking soda is alkaline with a PH of 9 while the PH in your hair and scalp is about, using baking soda tends to develop a PH imbalance, resulting in that your hair is apt to dry and fragile. If you opt for baking soda to cleanse, you are supposed to hydrate your hair with a moisturizer.
It is more likely that clarifying shampoos are PH balanced to match your hair and scalp, which help remove build up away. Moreover, those kinds of shampoos are designed to make hair appear to be shiny and touch to be silky for that silicones are included. But, you can not deny that silicones are not water-soluble and tend to build up on hair, essentially defeating the purpose of a clarifying shampoo. Containing drying and potentially irritating chemicals like sulfates is a shortcoming of it as well. Compared with baking soda treatment, a clarifying shampoo is much more expensive.
What if you don’t fond of applying neither of the two clarifying treatments or you face a dilemma to choose either of them? Opting for another option is also a good decision. For instance, how about choosing a shampoo with a gentler cleansing sulfate? On the other hand, you can make full use of the haircare products which contain nothing but water-soluble ingredients, making it feasible to be rinsed out completely and leaving no build up which minimize the essentiality of clarifying treatment.
